Limited Edition ready-made exclusive Collection piece: Stickle Bench by Will James
In our 9 January 2023 post, we featured and welcomed furniture designer-maker Will James into the Teer & Co fold of Artist-Designer-Makers.
Will has recently completed the innovative Stickle Bench and offered this as an exclusive to our Collection as a made and ready to ship one-off unique piece for sale.
The inspiration for creating the Stickle Bench came to Will when he was looking at the remnants of a lunch of fried fish, lovingly prepared by his mother-in-law and eaten looking out to sea in the Algarve.
Will was fascinated by the small spines, their articulation, their bend and flex. This influenced Will to set himself the challenge to create a piece of furniture that represents the dynamism and fluidity of such a form.
The Stickle Bench is a departure from traditional techniques usually employed for chair and bench making. Instead of rails and stretchers to prevent the legs from splaying outwards, this bench supports itself via a steel spine running through the seat from leg to leg. This allows the ribs of the bench to float.
The bench flexes imperceptibly under load in a way that allows the structure to find a new equilibrium, and subtly evokes the bend and flex of the spine that Will was so inspired by.
Will has joined us to offer his skills in creating timeless handcrafted furniture, from a small studio and workshop in central London, to support our management of bespoke commission work for interior designers, architects and private clients.
He typically draws inspiration from the geometric patterns in the environment around us; both from the natural world and urban surroundings. His style is most aligned with the qualities of mid 20th Century Scandinavian design, with a focus on materials, simplicity, function and elegance.
