Introducing Sandy Buchanan, Furniture & Sculpture Designer-Maker
I’m thrilled to welcome the talented Sandy Buchanan and his wonderful creations into the Teer & Co fold of Designer Makers.
For Sandy, ‘meaningful work’ was the overarching ideal behind setting up his business that guides all other values. There needs to be a purpose to the work - if every task is done to the best of your abilities it will result in a meaningful outcome. In furniture making this starts with the material, and to ensure a meaningful outcome it should be of the best quality possible, an important part of which is a measure of its sustainability.
Sandy works exclusively with fallen trees sourced from the British Isles, which means he knows what wood, estate or street his timber has come from and why it has come down, be it storm damage, disease or more unfortunately development. He passes these details onto his clients, providing a chain of custody for the materials in each piece.
The goal is always the same, saving beautiful timber that would otherwise be chipped, burnt or sent to landfill and taking the opportunity to preserve the story of that tree in a beautiful piece of furniture crafted in such a way as to make sure the piece will last and be passed down through generations.
And finally, when complete, it must fit the function and aesthetics desired, elevating the material by celebrating its natural beauty in a considered and honest way.
We present here a selection of Sandy’s made-to-order furniture lines and 2 of his wonderful sculptures.
Please note that some of Sandy’s items can be customised, and he is also available for bespoke-commission projects through Teer & Co. Just call us on 07957 627052 or send an email to simon@simonteer.com if you have any questions.
We love everything about Sandy’s approach and his work. We also really admire how the natural imperfections in the timber are celebrated rather than hidden. Not only is this a responsible use of a material, but it also means each piece is genuinely unique.
