The synergy of light and surface
In September 2025 we were thrilled to be invited to join the UK arm of Austrian lighting specialists XAL for this year’s Shoreditch Design Triangle.
Some of you will know that London Design Festival celebrates and promotes our city as the design capital of the world, and the 23rd edition took place in September 2025. As a part of LDF, the Shoreditch Design Triangle returned for its 18th consecutive year with an expanded programme of design-led events.
To mark this event and collaboration with XAL (recently covered in this post), we created this custom-designed Oak timber artwork installation using our decorative panelling to celebrate; design, our collaboration with XAL in their inspiring new showroom space and to highlight the synergy between light and surface.
Our decision to compose the Oak timber with natural satin oil finish artwork for their Reception area using the Arch 3D Wall Panels (SMOOTH Series) was simply inspired by and reflected the architectural structure and characterful and vaulted environment of the new XAL showroom space beneath Shoreditch’s railway arches.
Combining the Arch 3D panel design with Square 2D Wall Panels (FLAT Series) and orienting the Arch 3D panels in different ways helped us create a lighter more random composition that comprised 1.5 m2 ( 24 pcs) of each panel type making a total of just 48 pcs and 3 m2. The panel edges to the outer four sides of the 1.5m x 2m artwork were veneered to conceal the engineered plywood layering beneath the solid timber top surface of each panel.

One stand out event hosted at XAL was a talk - The Art Of Light: Transforming spaces through design - by Sally Storey, Founding Director of Lighting Design International with whom I had the pleasure of discussing our installation as briefly captured in this video produced by Devoted Films.
The opportunity with XAL
Over the coming months and into 2026, we’re excited to build the relationship with XAL.
